Children's Winter/Spring 2010 Classes

The Arts Center offers a variety of hands-on creative art classes and workshops for children from preschool through teens. Some adult classes allow teens from age 16.

Music

Intermediate Strings II

Have you been playing the violin, viola, cello or string bass for a year or more? Are you in grades 3-5? Then join us as we continue to learn about playing in an ensemble! You will learn how to play with other players in parts, and will continue to learn about playing your instrument. We will have a recital at the end of the semester to show off how much you have learned! Open to all in grades 3-5 who has played an orchestral stringed instrument for a year or more, or anyone who has been accessed by Ms. Skaar. Call Ms. Skaar for details 864-506-5850

Baskets of Fun

Create a handwoven basket and more; choose the shape and your favorite colors. Students will learn how to set up the base, twine, weave around the sides, and finish the rim border with the same skills our Native American ancestors used along with some of the instructor's new designs.

Little Artists / Preschool

Have your preschooler join us for an hour of art each week. We will explore a variety of techniques and mediums designed to exercise their gross and fine motor skills. (That is grown up speak for "we are going to have fun!!") They will be sure to get paint on their fingers and glitter on their noses, old play clothes or a special smock would be good to send along.

Muralist Diego Rivera

A fun and exciting class that lets children explore their creativity through painting pictures that communicate in a large way.
Learn how muralist Diego Rivera depicted everyday life--, the working people, marketplace, parents and children and the surrounding landscape. Using acrylic and tempera paints, students will paint individual canvases as well as a group mural canvas to be displayed in the Painting Studio.
Painter Georgia O'Keefe
Saturday, Mar. 6, 2010:
10am - 12:30pm

Students explore their creativity through painting pictures that communicate in a large way, learning how painter Georgia O'Keefe magnified simple shapes and forms from nature to give us a different perspective on subjects such as sea shells and flowers. Using acrylic and tempera paints, students will paint individual canvases inspired by photography taken in SC gardens and coastal areas.
Painter Henri Rousseau
Saturday, April 3, 2010:
10am - 12:30pm

Your child's vivid imagination awaits a blank canvas in this fun painting class where students will learn about painter Henri Rousseau and his brightly colored visions of jungle scenes. Using acrylic and tempera paints, the children will paint trees, flowers, and plants on individual canvases that as a group create a jungle mural.

Martial Arts/ Kuk Sool
Upstate Holistic Health

More than simply another style or system of Asian martial arts, Kuk Sool can almost be described as a "graduate level" martial arts program. An extremely comprehensive system, Kuk Sool is comprised of all aspects of traditional Asian martial arts -- striking and kicking, throwing and grappling, pressure points and joint locking, animal style techniques, traditional Korean forms, traditional Korean weapons, falling and martial arts gymnastics and Asian health and body protection techniques -- all drawn from the three traditional sub-groups of Korean martial arts and ALL offered in a single, unified and highly-structured system!
