The Arts Center offers a variety of hands-on creative activities, art classes and workshops for Adults and Teens. Whether you're a beginner or advanced student, our experienced instructors will be able to guide you to the next step in a comfortable and non-competitive environment. We welcome serious teens age 16+ into our adult classes

Photography

Introduction to Photography
Del Kimbler

Learn the basic principles of photography with emphasis on digital cameras. Learn, by making and critiquing photographs, some key concepts that can make your photographs better. Rental cameras are available for $40.

Photography Project

Define and execute your photography project with guidance and critique. Bring your own idea or define one in the first class meeting. Some experience or completion of the basic photo class are required. Rental cameras are available for $40.

Open Clay Studio / Drop in

The ceramic studio is open every Wednesday to former and currently enrolled clay students who wish to have more time to work on their skills using studio equipment. All policies are strictly enforced. Click here for Studio guidelines and fees.

Beginning Wheel Throwing

Students will learn the basic techniques for creating mugs and bowls. Wheel throwing, handle pulling, glazing and more will be taught in this introductory class.

Intermediate/Advanced Wheel Throwing

Students will learn the intermediate to advanced techniques for creating pitchers, platters, large bowls & teapots. Wheel throwing, handle pulling, glazing and more will be taught in this class.

Throwing Big!

Introduction to throwing large amounts of clay.Making an 18 inch cylinder and expanding it into a 12-14 inch sphere, throwing large platters and bowls, ending with throwing multiple large pieces to be assembled into a final form. Basic to intermediate throwing skills required.

The Teapot & The Jar

Working very specifically with the teapot form and what all can be done with it, as well as the potential challenges involved with all lidded forms. Multiple lid styles will be covered, as well as a variety of jar and teapot forms. Basic throwing skills required. All firing & glazing & one bag of clay included in tuition. Creative Jewelry

Students must wear sturdy closed toe shoes in order to participate in all jewelry classes.

Sterling and Copper Leaf Pendant
Laura Dahl

Emboss sterling silver and copper with materials from nature. Solder the two metals together to form a leaf shaped pendant. We will make additional items from copper we emboss as time and materials allow.

Making Glass Beads / Beginner

Learn the basics of making glass beads & the safety aspects involved. Create enough round, dot and line beads to complete a project. Register early; space limited to 4 students.

No-solder Copper and Bronze Earrings
Patricia Stalb

No experience needed to create your own earrings from copper and bronze sheet and wire. Using simple hand tools, bend and texture these metals in many unusual ways, and finish the pieces off with colorful beads. Students will take home several pairs of earrings.

Jewelry Making 101

Learn how to be a metalsmith! You'll use jeweler's hand tools to learn basic metal forming techniques, and you'll even get to try torch soldering. At the end of the class, you'll have several pieces of finished jewelry. No prior jewelry-making experience necessary. Students must wear sturdy closed-toed shoes and long pants in this class.

Beaded Copper Necklace and Earrings

Mixed Media

Handwoven Baskets
Pati English

Weave a basket of your choice using the same skills our ancestors employed many years ago. Select from a practical market basket, square, or round, casserole, or tissue box basket. Or choose to weave a sign of welcome golden pineapple shape vessel. Materials hand dyed by the instructor in colors of your choice: green, blue, wine, cocoa brown. Baskets are part of our heritage and practical pieces of art to add to your collection.

Painting

Basic Still Life Painting

Working from an intriguing still life set up and using water-mixable oil paints students will explore compositional options, blocking in the under painting and basic blending techniques. Please bring in your favorite relics; a surviving memorial of something past. Something kept in remembrance; souvenir, memento.

Open Painting Studio/ Drop in

Join your fellow painters every Thursday evening February through March in the center's painting studio. Open studios is designed for painters who desire camaraderie and a space to work on their oil, watercolor, or acrylic paintings. Yoga
Upstate Holistic Health

Yoga utilizes postures and breathing, bringing the body into a state of well being, allowing the mind to calm and subtle spiritual elements to emerge. Practiced sincerely and with open heart and mind, it creates unity between the material projection of the body and the spiritual soul. Hatha means sun(ha) and moon (tha). Pranayama: Breath Control: "prana" (life-force or energy source) and "ayama" (to control). Asanas: Postures: Body positions designed to improve health and remove diseases.

Tai Chi for Seniors

An ancient Chinese practice, Tai Chi is a "soft style" martial art that focuses on internal energy, health, breath control, balance, coordination and flexibility. Slow, circular movements are designed to improve suppleness and circulation and will leave you feeling more energized and alert!
