| In commemoration of the South
Carolina Arts Commission's fortieth anniversary, The ARTS Center is
pleased to present, "The African American Voice." This impressive
collection showcases the work of some of the state's most renowned artists.
The twenty-four African-American practitioners, who are represented in this
exhibition, bring an exciting range of mediums and approaches to artmaking,
creating an experience that is enriching to audiences on multiple levels.
From Mary Jackson, a celebrated artisan of the sweetgrass basket making
tradition, to Joseph Gandy, whose mixed media work brilliantly captures
a sense of people and place through pattern and geometry, to Sam Doyle,
the self-taught painter who takes scraps of wood and metal found around
his home of St. Helena Island, and produces vibrant representations of his
community.
The ARTS Center is incredibly honored in receiving the opportunity to display such an exceptional collection. In conjunction with The Brooks Center for the Performing Arts, we are offering a series of events and discussions that will bring the excitement of the work to the public. The experience begins January 15th at 7:00pm, with an opening reception at The ARTS Center, including Spirit Beat African Drumming and refreshments. The collection remains on view until February 29th. A docent will be available each Saturday from 2:30-3:30 to guide viewers through the gallery and larger groups can be accommodated upon reservation. Throughout The Arts Center exhibition dates several pieces of this acclaimed show will also be on display at Clemson University's Brooks Center for the Performing Arts. On January 17th a special performance of the Princely Players will be offered to complement the exhibit. This performance explores the human spirit and the Civil Rights Movement through song. |
